Your Umrah Starts with the Right Flight — Let’s Get It Right from the Beginning.
Booking your flight is the first real step in your DIY Umrah journey.
Step 5 of 7 · Flights
Jeddah or Madinah? And When?
Two airports. One critical Ihram decision. One best booking window. All covered here.
✈️ Step 1: Which airport?
This affects everything — especially a mandatory religious obligation you need to know about.
JED
King Abdulaziz Intl · Jeddah
- More flights, lower prices
- 80km to Makkah (1–1.5 hrs)
- Direct path to Umrah
- Must enter Ihram on the plane ⚠️
- Higher stress for first-timers
MED
Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz · Madinah
- No Ihram stress at airport
- Start with calm Madinah visit
- Relaxed, logical sequence
- Fewer flights, sometimes pricier
- 420km to Makkah afterwards
✓ Recommended for first-timers
⚠️ Critical: You MUST enter Ihram before crossing the Miqat
For Jeddah flights, the Miqat boundary is crossed in the air — about 30–45 minutes before landing. Crossing without being in Ihram is a serious religious matter.
- Wear Ihram garments before boarding at your home airport — this is the safest approach
- Islamic carriers (Saudia, Royal Jordanian) announce the Miqat. Non-Islamic carriers do NOT — don’t rely on them
- Make your Niyyah and recite Talbiyah while on the plane, before landing
✅ No in-flight Ihram pressure
Flying into Madinah means you visit Masjid Nabawi first, without needing Ihram. You’ll enter Ihram later at Masjid Dhul Hulaifah — the Miqat for Madinah, just outside the city. Most relaxed approach for first-timers.
🗺️ Recommended trip sequence
This order minimises stress and follows the natural pilgrimage flow.

From JED
Why Madinah first: No Ihram required, no ritual obligations. You visit the mosque, book your Rawdah permit, and settle in. Then enter Ihram at Masjid Dhul Hulaifah before the train or drive to Makkah. Removes the most stressful part entirely.
📅 Step 2: When to travel?
Timing affects prices, crowds, and how early to book.
Ramadan
Peak season
Nov–Feb
Best weather
Mar–Oct
Off-peak
🌙 Ramadan: Book 3–6 months ahead minimum.
Prices 2–4× higher than off-peak. Crowds are intense, especially the last 10 days. The spiritual atmosphere is incomparable though. Rooms within 500m sell out months in advance.

❄️ November–February: The sweet spot.
Temperatures 20–30°C. Prices reasonable. Crowds manageable outside school holidays. Book 8–12 weeks ahead for best prices. Recommended for first-timers.

☀️ March–October: Prepare for heat.
June–August reaches 40–48°C — demanding, especially for outdoor Tawaf. Prices lower during non-holiday periods. Book 6–10 weeks ahead. Stay close to the Haram, carry water, plan around cooler night prayers.

💡 Important flight tips
Zamzam water: 5L free on Saudi carriers
Saudia and most Gulf carriers allow 5L in checked luggage. Other airlines may charge or refuse it. Check before you travel.
Saudia announces the Miqat — most others don’t
If flying Jeddah, consider Saudia or Gulf Air — both announce the Miqat crossing. On other carriers, plan to be in Ihram before boarding.
Haramain High Speed Train: Jeddah–Makkah–Madinah
2.5 hours, SAR 60–250 depending on class. Book via the HHR app. Much more comfortable than road travel between cities.
Jeddah has two terminals — check yours in advance
Terminal 1: domestic and some Gulf flights. Terminal 2: main international terminal. They’re far apart and not connected.
