Umrah Packing List for Men — What to Actually Bring and What to Skip

Most men overpack for Umrah. I have seen guys at the airport with two full suitcases for a 10-day trip, half of which they never touch. You do not need five pairs of trousers, three jackets, or a full pharmacy. What you need is a tight, practical packing list that covers documents, ihram, toiletries, meds, and electronics — and nothing more. [1]

Documents and paperwork

You cannot board your flight without the right documents, and you will not get through Saudi immigration if anything is missing. • Passport with at least six months of validity from your travel date [1]
• Umrah visa or tourist eVisa — print a paper copy even if you have the digital version [1]
• Vaccination certificate — check the latest requirements at least two weeks before departure; requirements change and different countries have different rules [1]
• Hotel booking confirmations for every city you plan to stay in [4]
• Flight tickets — print them; phone batteries die at the worst times [4]
• Travel insurance with emergency medical cover — check it explicitly covers Saudi Arabia [1]

Ihram and what to wear during Umrah

The ihram is the only outfit that matters for the rituals themselves. Get it right and you do not think about it. Get it wrong — scratchy fabric, slipping cloth, or a torn belt — and you spend half your tawaf distracted. [4]

Pack two full ihram sets. One set is not enough. You will sweat through the first one during tawaf, and wearing a damp ihram the next day is unpleasant. Two sets let you rotate and wash between uses. Buy 100% cotton or a cotton-poly blend — pure polyester feels like a plastic bag in 40-degree heat. [4]

• Two ihram cloths per set — the white unstitched wraps [4]
• Ihram belt — this holds the lower cloth in place and gives you somewhere to keep your phone and hotel key card [4]
• Ihram sandals — exposed ankles and top of foot. Do not bring flip-flops that rub between your toes after 30 minutes of walking. Look for sandals with a wide strap and a comfortable sole. Break them in at home for at least a week before you travel [4]
• Small unscented wipes — for freshening up between wudu without breaking ihram rules [2]
• Small scissors — for the hair trim after Sa’i. Hotel scissors are not always available, and you do not want to use nail clippers on your hair [9]

If your flight goes directly to Jeddah or Taif, pack one full ihram set in your hand luggage. You cross the miqat in the air, and you need to be in ihram before you land. If your checked bag gets delayed, you still have an ihram ready. I have seen this go wrong — do not be the guy borrowing an ihram from a stranger at Jeddah airport. [4]

Non-ihram clothes

You will spend most of your trip outside ihram — travelling between cities, eating, resting at the hotel, walking through Madinah. Pack light, breathable clothes that you can rotate. [5]

Pack 3-4 light outfits. Think loose cotton trousers, lightweight long-sleeve shirts, and a comfortable travel outfit for the flight. You are in Saudi Arabia, so keep it modest and covered — short sleeves are fine but avoid tank tops and short-shorts, especially near the Haram. [5]

• 3-4 pairs of lightweight trousers or joggers [5]
• 3-4 long-sleeve or short-sleeve tops — cotton or linen [5]
• 5-7 pairs of underwear and socks — you will walk a lot, change socks daily [5]
• One light jumper or hoodie — hotel and train air conditioning can be aggressive [5]
• Comfortable walking shoes for non-ihram days — one pair is enough. Do not pack two pairs of trainers [5]

Packing cubes will change your life here. One cube for ihram, one for daily clothes, one for electronics. When you arrive at the hotel at 2 a.m., you open the right cube and you are sorted — no rummaging. [10]

Unscented toiletries and hygiene

This section trips up more first-timers than anything else. Once you are in ihram, you cannot use scented products — no perfumed soap, no scented deodorant, no fragranced shampoo. Pack a separate unscented kit and keep it inside your ihram pouch so you do not accidentally reach for the wrong bottle. [2]

• Unscented deodorant — look for brands marketed specifically for Hajj and Umrah [2]
• Unscented shampoo [2]
• Unscented wet wipes — useful for freshening up between wudu while in ihram [2]
• Toothbrush and unscented toothpaste — standard toothpaste with mint flavouring is fine, the “unscented” rule applies to body products you leave on, not oral hygiene [2]
• Nail clippers — use before ihram only; cutting nails during ihram is not permitted [2]
• Sunscreen — unscented, SPF 50. You will be outside more than you think [2]
• Blister plasters — walking circuits around the Kaaba and Safa-Marwah add up fast [2]

A small separate pouch labelled “ihram” keeps everything separate. When you are back in normal clothes, you can use your regular toiletries again. [2]

Medication rules for Saudi Arabia

Saudi customs are strict about medications, and the rules change. What you can bring depends on whether your medicine is classified as a controlled substance. [6]

Over-the-counter medications like paracetamol, ibuprofen, antihistamines, and basic cold remedies do not require a permit. But always carry them in the original packaging with the pharmacy label attached. A plastic bag of loose pills is a red flag at customs. [7]

Controlled medications — this includes codeine-based painkillers, tramadol, ADHD stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin, anti-anxiety medications like Xanax and Valium, and certain antidepressants — are heavily regulated. You need SFDA clearance before you travel. Apply at least two to three weeks before departure through cds.sfda.gov.sa. Bring a copy of your prescription and a doctor’s letter. [6]

• Antiseptic cream — small tube [7]
• Rehydration salts — heat exhaustion is real in Makkah [7]

Phone, power bank, charger, eSIM

Your phone is your map, your prayer-time tracker, your ticket wallet, and your camera. Keep it charged. [3]

• Phone with a Saudi eSIM — buy and activate the eSIM before you leave. STC, Mobily, and Zain all offer tourist packages. You need data for Nusuk, Google Maps, and WhatsApp. [3]
• Power bank — must go in cabin luggage only. Power banks are not allowed in checked baggage under international air safety rules. A 10,000 mAh bank gives you two full phone charges. [3]
• Universal travel adapter — Saudi Arabia uses Type G plugs (UK-style, three rectangular pins) [3]
• Short charging cable — a 20 cm cable is easier to manage while walking with a power bank in your ihram belt [3]

Hotel Wi-Fi in Makkah and Madinah is generally decent, but do not count on it. The Nusuk app needs a stable connection, and 5G on a Saudi SIM is faster than most hotel networks. [3]

Cash and money

Cards are widely accepted in Saudi Arabia — hotels, malls, restaurants, and Haramain train ticket machines all take Visa and Mastercard. But cash is still the default for taxis, street food, small shops, and tipping. [8]

Bring SAR 1,000 to SAR 2,000 in cash in mixed denominations — SAR 50 notes are the most useful. Change money before you leave if your home currency gives a better rate, or withdraw SAR from an ATM at Jeddah airport on arrival. Most international debit cards work at Saudi ATMs. [8]

Do not carry more than SAR 1,500 to SAR 2,500 at any one time. Spread cash between your wallet, hotel safe, and a hidden pocket in your ihram belt. If you lose one, you still have the rest. [8]

What to keep in your carry-on

Checked luggage gets delayed. It happens often enough that you should plan for it. If your suitcase does not arrive, you still want to be able to function. [9]

Common packing mistakes

• Packing three pairs of shoes. You need one pair of ihram sandals and one pair of comfortable walking shoes. That is it. Extra trainers take up space you could use for Zamzam on the way home.
• Bringing scented deodorant for ihram days. Once you are in ihram, scented products are out. Pack a dedicated unscented stick. [2]
• Not packing ihram in hand luggage for direct Jeddah/Taif flights. You cross the miqat mid-flight. If your checked bag is delayed, you arrive at Jeddah airport without an ihram. This is fixable but stressful. [4]
• Overpacking electronics. You do not need a laptop, a tablet, and a Kindle. Phone plus power bank is enough for most people. Every extra device is weight and a security-check delay.
• Thinking you will buy everything there. Yes, Makkah has malls. But finding unscented toiletries at 1 a.m. after a long flight is not how you want to spend your first night. Pack the essentials at home. [2]

• Packing bulky jackets. Makkah and Madinah are hot year-round. One light hoodie for air-conditioned spaces is enough. Leave the winter coat at home. [5]

FAQ

Can I bring my regular deodorant and just not use it during ihram? [2]

Yes, but keep it in a separate pouch from your ihram kit. The rule is simple — do not apply scented products while in ihram. Outside ihram, use whatever you want. I pack two small deodorant sticks, one scented and one unscented, in clearly different pouches to avoid mistakes.

How many ihram sets do men actually need? [4]

Two. One to wear and one spare. During tawaf in peak heat, you will sweat through the first set. Having a dry, clean ihram for the next day makes a real difference. If your trip is longer than 10 days, still two sets — just wash and rotate.

Do I need to pack a prayer mat? [2]

Not really. The Haram provides prayer mats, and the floors in Makkah and Madinah mosques are clean. [2] I pack a thin foldable mat only if I plan to pray outside during travel stops. For most pilgrims, it is dead weight.

What happens if my checked luggage gets delayed? [9]

Your carry-on should have one ihram set, one change of clothes, essential medications, and your documents. That covers you for 24-48 hours. Buy toiletries and extra clothes at Abraj Al Bait or a nearby mall in the meantime. Most airlines deliver delayed bags within two days.

Are AirTags worth packing? [3]

If you check a bag, yes. An AirTag or similar tracker in your suitcase gives you peace of mind and makes it easier for airline staff to find your bag. [8] SAR 150 for an AirTag is cheaper than the stress of not knowing where your luggage is.
